Week 3 Step 3 - A New Discovery

Part 1

Among three areas that I need to improve, I decided to choose taking notes as my priority. Even though I don’t write down and highlight everything, that is not enough for me to take notes effectively. From those note taking techniques, I picked out three that fit my studying style, and I also can combine them together. Those three techniques are 2-6 methods, using colors and review-retype-revise notes. With 2-6 methods, I split my notes and have a clear header, allowing myself to track the note at ease every time I need to do so. Switching to other colors will slow me down, but this technique helps me pick out important information. And after that, by reviewing my notes, I can memorize them and revise them, making notes easier to read and understand.

Part 2

Before this week’s module, I tend to have a negative intention against AI. That is because many people claim AI’s work as their own and think many careers such as digital art, musician, programmer can be done simply with AI. However, at the same time, I raise a question, trying to find the good side of using AI. While working on my industrial analysis essay, I found out that Microsoft is using AI to improve upcoming video games, rather than replacing employees or making a whole game with AI. Together with choosing an ethics topic for discussion, I decided to take this chance to gather more information and have a deeper understanding of AI. In addition, I wrote argument papers before in high school, but this is the first time I learned about different ethics used for ethics papers. Lots of new knowledge to gain, I’m really looking forward to this upcoming ethic paper assignment.

Part 3

From the reading assignment What a Computer Science Major Needs to Know, it provides many fundamental but essential knowledge for many careers of computer science major. It includes the general recommendations that everyone in this major should have, regardless of their position. Having portfolio instead of resume, communicating, engineering core, programming language, discrete mathematics, data structures and algorithm are basic keys for every computer scientist. For those who are in specific career, the document also includes basic knowledge of what they should know. Even though it doesn’t have the gaming programmer, the document provides crucial information yet easy to understand for me. The portfolio caught my attention because that is what I intend to do but don’t know what and where to start. However, this is a good sign that I’m following the right track, and a portfolio is one of my priorities, something I need to do soon.

Part 4

In computer science, the line of plagiarism is a little unclear. Some people may cross this line without knowing they have done so. On the other hand, some don’t want to cross this line to the point of isolating themselves, which is not good practice in computer science careers. Moreover, with 100% online learning environments, the computer science online program has perfect conditions for both sides, plagiarists and loners, to commit what they desire. While the online program encourages loners to take part and communicate with other members, the Code of Integrity handles the plagiarists. With that, students can see a clear line of which case is acceptable and which is not. Moreover, it is very dangerous if students carry plagiarism into workplaces after graduation. Because with computer science, copying or stealing lines of codes without understanding and debugging may lead to catastrophe for the project, the team and even the company. Therefore, it is crucial students understand and follow the Code of Integrity strictly in the online program.
